For a lot of parents, the hardest part isn't admitting your family needs support — it's finding someone who actually gets your child. That's the gap Hannah Ly, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in San Jose, has built her practice around.

Meet the Practice

Hannah's path to becoming a child and teen therapist started early — during high school and college, she spent time working with children in different capacities. The most impactful moments were international trips to Malawi and Ukraine, where she worked with children who had lost one or both parents — and saw firsthand how much of a difference therapeutic support could make in helping them feel secure again. That experience shaped everything that came after.

Today, at Your Therapy Nook, Hannah's goal is simple to say and hard to do: help families find their way back to joy. "Along the way, it may have gotten covered by the big behaviors and hectic schedules," she says, "but the joy of delighting in your child is always there, and can be found again and again."

Who She Helps

Hannah works with children as young as 4 and with teens, which sets her apart in an area where young-child specialists can be hard to find. She has particular depth with families formed through adoption — drawing on both her international work and 10 years in foster care — as well as families navigating divorce, childhood anxiety, and disruptive behavior at home or school.

For teens specifically, sessions often address school-related anxiety, self-harming behaviors, or questions of identity, blended with both play-based tools and more traditional talk therapy.

How She Works

Hannah is a play therapist first, which means sessions are child-centered and use play as the primary way kids process what they're feeling. Parents stay closely involved too, with regular caregiver check-ins throughout treatment.

A first appointment starts with a 50-minute telehealth session for caregivers only — paperwork, goals, and a conversation about what's going on. When the child comes in for their first session, they're given a say in whether their caregiver stays in the room, and the rest of the time is theirs to explore the space and get comfortable at their own pace.

Making It Accessible

Your Therapy Nook is hybrid, based in San Jose and serving Redwood City and the surrounding Peninsula. Hannah accepts insurance and private pay, and offers a free consultation for families who want to see if she's the right fit before committing.

In Her Own Words

"I want [kids] to feel welcome in my space and to feel safe enough to be themselves."
